stunning, this sort of stuff is what dreams are made of !!

how did they locate the stug in the first place ?

you can imagine the massive amount of torque required to pull something of that weight out of deep sticky mud.

    thanks for posting.

This is one of only two known surviving StuG.IV

Hopefully they will be able to recover the entire vehicle (I believe they only recovered the upper hull superstructure, the lower hull is still in the ground) and give it a proper restoration

Hopefully this one doesn't end up like the StuG III they found in Poland. Then again, it seems in pretty rough shape already.

you mean, the Stug III found in 2002 near Saratov.. which was extracted with original paint and markings, and near to complete equipment; and then which remains in Saratov rusting away and with all the equipment stolen (anyway that's one more "saved", and maybe one day a serious association our museum will restore it, needing millions Euros or Dollars, when it would have needed ten times less money to restore it in 2002......).

The Stug IV will hopefully be restored by a competent and serious team..

I believe this is the StuG located now at the Patton Armor Museum at Fort Knox, Kentucky? The StuG at Knox has the same history as this one.

what pisses me off is lack of imagination.... - did You see a picture of front hooks beeing torn from the body...

its obvious that You cant just pull a vehicle like that from a deep mud...

first - DIG a lot - then after it will be all dug out - pull it intact, in one piece.......

but Polish way is always - the cheapest one - and then You have stug in parts....
                it pisses me off...

Well, this is because the wrong people took care of that thing, but this is always like that with those valuable items.
Besides, I would not generalize with that "Polish way" ESPECIALLY when it comes to engineering (of any kind) for which Poland has always been famous.

                    Hi,

I think the Stug III you mean was found in Russia.

                    Cheers

You mean "famous" - when a hall in Katowice colapsed under a cap of snow ??

I guess it takes living abroad for a while to have a more distant look at some things - the way We do it in Poland - and the way its done in other countries.
dont take it personal, and dont overreact (like PM You send me) but truth is - if they already redirected the river - why not wait a one day more.. drain whole water - then dug the mud.. and finally pull the whole vehicle...

Dont take "the Polish way" as a negative against whole nation, Think about it before sending me proud Polish PM's, its about this lack of imagination that sometimes pisses me off so bad - and its like Polish habit to screw simple things...

Trust Me - I am Polish.. I was rased there... And there are things I love in Poland, and I am proud of them.. but there are other things that We have a tendency to screw up... and the only way to fix them - is to talk about them. No reason to be ashamed - no one is perfect

                      peace and love

Well, sorry mate, but I don`t like discussing such things in public as they concern none of those guys here and that is why I sent you a Private Message that you answered right here.

                            Hello All,

Stug III found in Saratov (Saratov is in Russia for sure, not in Poland) - I guess it's still in Russia, on the monument - it was discussed a few posts back.

Main problem in Poland (I'm Polish too...) is a law - private collectors still act half-legally, risking that "toys" can be taken from them, and state museums have no money to do anything, even for carrying heavy items by truck or for paint. Good thing would be to have agreement in between these two groups, but here starts a real life...

Configuration, that happened this time is pretty good - Stug IV will be placed in Tank Museum in Poznan, which is the best museum of this type in Poland (they have a few tanks restored to running condition), and important is that it's financed by Army - it's in far better situation than other museums. Few serious mistakes were made during recovery - let's hope it will be "learned lesson" for them - for sure they are consious what they have. Other thing is, that recovery was very difficult - it was under approx. 3 meters of mud.

In fact it was one of many actions about this vehicle - in 50's Army tried to pull it out with train (it was very close to railbridge), then they tried to demolish it with explosives (that's when probably welds were broken) , much later some private collectors tried to recover it, but they gave up, and finally - last actions. First one - they recovered a wheel (?!), next one - upper part of the hull, we are still waiting for the last part of recovery.

Let's hope it will be restored in proper way.
