Can anyone tell me if the Germans actually used captured Russian SU-76 as assault guns or did they use them for other things?

German use of SU-76

Hi Karagin,
I can't say I've ever seen a photograph of an SU76 in use as I have T34s, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if they were used when necessary. I'd somehow think they would be employed more as towing vehicles than combat ones since at range, vehicle type (shape, etc.) was rather more recognizable than markings- so regardless of the large Balkankreuz that would have been painted on any captured vehicles, I'd think that operating a Soviet machine wouldn't be the most desirable assignment- for fear of being knocked-out by one's own side. However, as long as there was ammunition and a crew available, and the vehicle was fitted with a German radio, I can't see any major reason they couldn't be used in action.

SU-76
It is known that Germans captured and pressed number of SU-76 into service and it would not be a problem to maintain it because Germans already used T-70 light tanks and 76.2mm ammunition was available. SU-76 was either designated as Panzerjaeger SU-76(r) or Sturmgeschuetz SU-76(r).
There was also SU-76i based on captured German PzKpfw III and Stug III vehicles.Attached Files
