    Panzer skull identification.

    Hello panzers,

Any info on this please. I think it's a Panzer collar dog but I'm not sure. It was found in Berlin after a fire in 2004. Dimensions are 3cm tall, 4cm across. Any info welcome on this. Does it look genuine to you guys?

    many thanks,

    Simon Cooper

Hi Simon, it would appear to be an original. Note the remains of the silver wash finish.

    Cheers, Ade.

      size?

      Ade, Many thanks,

The only question mark I had was about its size. As I said the dimensions are 3cm tall by 4cm wide which I have to say stuck me as being rather large for a collar tab badge. I looked at a few books but found it difficult to to tell the scale from books. Are they all this size?

      Many thanks,

      Simon Cooper

Hi Simon, sorry I have cocked up here! I was too busy looking at the pics and did not fully read your text as I came to look at the thread after your PM to me. Opps!

However, the badge is original, but not a Panzer collar tab skull.

Panzer skulls measure roughly 22 mm x 20 mm.

The skull in the photo is an Imperial pattern skull used by Hussars etc but these were also worn by the SS pre 1934. The size is correct for this

Like Panzer skulls, the design of these can vary quite a bit in detail from maker to maker.

        Cheers, Ade.

Be very careful with these....there appear to be many if them suddenly on the market.....especially on ebay and all called various things......I suspect someone has been turning them out in bulk! (just search ebay militaria with "skull' or "totenkopf" and you are likely to find one!)

Size is important, but it certainly isn't the standard panzer totenkopf.
          Cheers, Wade K.

Hi Wade, I agree with you about lots of these being on the market. Did you see a couple of threads within the forum about a hoard of these being dug up? I know Robin commented on them. They appear to be OK.

But caution is always advised when anything turns up in bulk. Good advice.

            Cheers, Ade.
