Thanks to Fredrick from Fjm44 militaria for this nice add to my Flak38 Project!!!. These Stroopwafels give me an energy to finish my project faster than I though!
Another part for my project directly from Normandy is this Shield mount I will sandblast it and it will be ready to use
Also I picked up tripod from sandblasting. Now it will be easier to weld missing parts. Now I see more holes to repair and I found an traces of signatures. Unfortunetly condition of metal is not so good as I expected to see. There are a lot of rust craters and surface is not smooth. But I have what I have. Maybe in future I will find better tripod and then I will replace mine. But now I must repair this one.
I made wooden foam to be sure that turntable will fit inside perfectly. Now is a time for welding.

That's great. It gives us an idea of the actual scale of your task. Keep at it. Are you going to smooth the pitting with some sort of metal filler before the final painting?Comment

I will not put any putty, only where surface is not so smooth I will try to replace metal with flat scrap of 2mm steel plates. But I will do this only at the front of base.Originally posted by Lampwick View Post
The base was made, but I made a mistake and I kept the 85 cm diameter inside the circle. Unfortunately, it should be the dimension inside the flat bar welded from the top of the circle and this flat bar extends inside. To sum up, I missed 1 cm in diameter and the turntable does not go in. Half Saturday it went to correct the error. One picture shows how much I had to widen the entire base. Well, but the bug has already been fixed. And so I think it turned out great considering the scraps I made this base from.
The surface is not finished yet, I will do it at the very end, when I am sure that everything is ok. I will also restore all the welds where they should be. I will also try to smooth the surface in the most dented places. I will not put a putty, but at most I will try to insert smooth elements made of 2mm sheet metal.

Another thing is the renovation of the latches, which were mostly cut from the relics of the base. Additionally, fun with bending the tubes needed to make extra handles.
I also played a blacksmith and forged from a flat bar the missing pieces of a ring welded on the top of the base. The whole turntable lies on it.
At the end of the day I took care of adding a footrest to the trigger mechanism. I have the original, but it is in poor condition and I used it as a model to make a nicer copy.Comment

Today I have officially finished the renovation of the tripod base. The legs are regenerated and inserted - they work fine, also I added a new flap, hook and butterfly and I applied welds where they should be originally. Regenerated and working bolts holding the turntable bearing. I only had to buy one bearing to mount the third foot. And I can re-fasten the turntable in the bearing ring. I am curious about the effect.. I must say I nerlvet thing how much time I will need to restore this tripod. I assumed 3 days ... it turned out to be 3 weeks.

I think cheaper will be buying complete flak than make repro one. This is very complicated construction. As all in German weapon - too much complicated.
Officialy stage one of my project is completed.
I am also looking for nice photos with flak38 painted in camo - for inspiration. I Think I must paint it in base colour now because later it will be much harder to do.
