    508th Heavy Tank Battalion

    Hi Guys

I am looking for photographs or information regarding the 508th Heavy Tank Battalion ( Tigers ) during their period of fighting around the Anzio Beachhead. I am completing a book on the 1st Special Service Force and they encountered this unit all the way from Anzio to Artena and then in Rome. I am also looking for photo's or information on other Panzer units that fought along the southern or right flank of the Anzio Beachhead. The information I need is the name of Panzer units in the area. I would just like to acquire one good image of a 508 tank and crew.

Any help would be veyr much appreciated,

    Hi Ken,

JJ Fedorowicz Published the sPzAbt508 unit history in 2001- it's not as huge a volume as most of unit histories they publish (it's 188 pages), but it's probably worth your while to check the book out- and they could help you get in touch with some of the former members of the unit and others who provided the photographs within.

      508th info

      Hi Matt

Thanks for that info, I was not aware they had a history published. I will look into it. I also need to confirm that they mixed with other units. I have an average knowledge of things German during the war, however it states in many records that Tigers fought in conjunction with Panthers. Would this not have to be two different units operating together? Was this the main purpose of Heavy tank units to operate in close conjunction with other tank formations? I need to clarifiy exactly who these Panther tanks belonged to. I guess the mix and match state of the 14th Army would have also made this more likely at Anzio.

Schwere Panzer Abteilung 508 was formed Aug 1943 and was sent to Italy.
It fought the allies at Anzio and through Italy suffering heavy casualties. It was disbanded Feb 1945.
