I’ve had a couple of them , it’s hard for me to explain but it appears to have a thin coating on the obverseof a Tombak nature. On the reverse it is raw patinated Zink, you can see the fine outer rim on the edges of the silver obverse .
I tried to capture the sun reflection. On neck guard of helmet on obverse, it is a different material than reverse.
To my eye it does look like it has been treated with some kind of plating, but whether period done is probably hard to say. I was trying to see if the silver went into the edge of the groove near the top on the reverse, but I could not tell when enlarging it.
Does anyone know the reason there are such grooves and other such marks on the reverses of different wound badges? I guess it is probably down to manufacturing process.

I will make a better shot when back in town, regarding the groove at the top (another oddity lol) its an optical illusion, it is superficial and not cut into the badge. its some sort of discoloration. I will make pics micro close to the rim. Hey, at least its something interesting!
