    Black Wound Badge -Opinions Please

    Hi All,

I recently picked up this very, very sorry looking black wound badge. Condition was very much a factor and I paid not very much at all for it. I have no real concerns about authenticity in view of its condition but,on top of this, everything seems to check out.

It was a soldier's souvenir piece which seems to have once been affixed to a display board (by not so sympathetically nailing a hole through it) and has been polished to within an inch of its life which has smoothed away a lot of the detail.

My question is what the best thing to do with it might be (please, nobody say throw it in the bin!). I could fill the hole with filler and do some restoration work or do you feel it would be better to simply treat it as a relic piece. I suppose I could reaffix it to something through the existing hole.

As always, opinions welcome. Many thanks,

    Simon

        Worn Old Wound Badge

Hello Simon, don’t spoil it any more. It is what it is, and no amount of restoration is going to make you feel any different about it, and you will always know that it has an unsightly nail hole in it. If you have a cabinet or box you keep your pieces in, why not fix it to the lid or door. I think that would be cool and appropriate too.
        Regards
        Norman

as the others say, leave it as it is. Since there is a hole, you can mount is same way. There are milions of BWB around but not that many with same story as this one. I like it

Thanks for your thoughts gents. I am inclined to agree with you. I think the only thing worse than a bloody great hole is a crudely repaired bloody great hole. I will try to fix it to something.

I have given it a light clean to remove that nasty iridescent sheen (caused by careless polishing) and expect it to tone down nicely.

As Yubari kindly says, this one has its own story, and is still an interesting piece in its own right, even if it's not 'collector grade'.

I love bits like this. Keep it. Who knows what this badge has seen? If only it could talk....

I would also leave as it is. I wouldn't even clean the badge myself. Could have quite some stories to tell indeed.
Restoring the badge would only ruin the badge in my opinion.
