Woodwork group with cloth wound badge, StuG unit

    Hi all,

this was brought to me by a friend whos grandpa served as a StuG driver. This cloth wound badge was folded between the documents. The set is directly out of the woodwork so this is another proof for these WB´s beeing period.
From what I have read it is believed that these cloth versions were suposed to be a filler, or for the Soldbuch. I must say I dont think so.
The cloth was wrinkeld as you can see and when I stretched it in form I felt that it was sticking together a bit. This remind me of the patches which you could "glue" onto the jeans with an iron when you had a hole in them as a kid. Also the fieldgrey backround makes me believe these were made to wear and not as a filler untill you get a metal one.
I believe they could have been cut and "ironed" onto the actual uniform. Of course someone should try if it sticks to cloth using a hot iron.

What are your thoughts on this ?

    Jens

Maybe - just a thought - some guys liked this kind of badge because if they were down in the vehicle, a metal badge might get hung up on various handles or edges, and a cloth badge wouldn't. You'd think if that was the case, we might see more....but it's a thought.

What a wonderful group! It's interesting to see one of these cloth Wound Badges come out of the woodwork. I'd always through they were for wear on an alternative uniform or sports shirt, but it makes they could have been used on a temporary basis or as something less bulkly, similar to cloth DKs or cloth LW air crew awards.

The Betzel signed EK doc is really great - sadly, he would be killed less than a year later in Danzig.

                regards

The group of doc's are very nice, still skeptical for CWB's though...

Regarding cloth wound badges I found this:

So it appears a request has been made for cloth badges to be temporarily being awarded due to shortage of metals. The question has been denied and it says plenty of metal badges will be available again for awarding.
So if I understand all correct no cloth badges have been officially awarded.

                      Hi Marcel,

                      the document says the opposite:

Major Fink has asked if there are any concerns to give out such cloth badges and the answer is in the negative (meaning there are no concerns to give out cloth badges).

Based on this, the cloth badge was officially sanctioned by the Praesidialkanzlei.

                      Regards
                      Christian

                      P.S.
It is stated too that the cloth badges are only a "temporary" solution and will be given out with a preliminary award document which has to handed back when the official document with a metal badge is received.

Administration language is sometimes difficult to understand.

BTW, the question of Major Fink is also more "rhetoric" as its mentioned that his office (Heerespersonalamt - Army staff administration) already gave orders to the Armed forces procurement office to buy such patches. It seems they wanted to avoid a "no" from the Kanzlei by having created already facts.

I found a set (black, silver and gold) directly from a US veteran in one of my motel buys years ago. I had seen a few at shows in the 1960s, but they were never available on a large scale.
