    SWB 26 Finish/re-paint?

    Hi all,

I have a question about the finish on this SWB 26. I have done the acetone test on the edge/rim of the badge and the silver finish came off.

I know this is not a fool-proof test but do you think this badge has been re-finished/re-painted? There is a very clear difference between finishes on the front and back.

If the majority think this is not a wartime finish, what do you recommend? Do you maintain the badge as is or do people strip badges? Like I said, I tested the edge with acetone and it cleaned up well. Is the repaint just part of the historical record for this badge now or should it be treated and the paint removed?

Curious to hear what other collectors do in this situation.

I have attached a picture to show the contrast between front and back, as well as a detailed shot that I hope shows the difference between the acetone treated edge and the front of the badge. I am happy to add more pictures if they will help.

    Thanks in advance!

Looks like front of the badge was repainted. Remove paint with acetone, so you get badge in original condition! IMO

As you said this test is not a one way solution, especially what kind of treatment applied for finish, ie: washed technique.

Also other tests are the practical smell, rub test, scratching - plus leaving it outside for a while from the display to a non very friendly environment.
