Gold Wound Badge?

Well, yours certainly show a bit more charachter than mine does. I wonder why mine has almost no trace of gold left in the pebbling whereas those above retain quite a bit in that area. I can't see any deterioration of the zinc anywhere that would indicate breakdown due to dipping or other methods of cleaning? Maybe the surface wasn't prepared in the proper manner before painting?

It is a known fact that later on in the war, some Silver Wound Badges (and Black) were painted gold to substitute for the real thing. It may have been one of these, and like you say, the gold was not applied very well and the underlying zinc caused it to be washed off much more easily than the other examples.

When you think about it...

I guess that makes the piece all the more interesting. Wound badges are a new area for me. To be honest, I always overlooked them because they are not complex, and well executed like the other upper-end awards. With that being said, I have started to develope a fondness for thes as well as their Imperial counterparts. I think knowing what was required to wear this award is worth more than the tangible representations that we are discussing.

Plus they are still fairly cheap to collect ... with respect to the other awards. Unless cased, you can usually pick up all three classes (depending on condition) for $125(gold one) or less.

I would love to have the cased silver one on Mr. Jessen's site, but with all due respect to him- I think $200.00 is way over the top. I will say to his credit, he hasn't inflated all of his pieces to the level of the ridiculous as some others. I definitely plan to purchase from him again soon.
