Odd background on brass black wound badge.

I've had many of these over the years, but until this afternoon I have never seen this variation wound badge. Maybe I've never paid much attention to the backgrounds....?

Normally I'm accustom to seeing a cross-hatched pattern in the areas around the helmet, etc. This badge does not have the cross-hatching!

    See photos.

Can anyone educate me as to why, or is this just a manufacture's variation?

    Thanks,
    Howard

Sorry for the poor quality photos.

Here's a brass black wound with the cross-hatching background, and a photo of the badge with the odd background.

    Best,
    Howard

        Hello Howard,
I believe this one is known as an Assman design. Or a chaotic pattern.

Like Ralph says these goes under the name Assmann design. The so called Assmann design badge and the makermarked Assmanns in zinc are the only ones with the chaotic dot-pattern. This type and the Assmann is not a 100% match in design though.
