    Black wound with round catchplate

    Hi All
Has anyone ever seen a black wound badge with a round catchplate? This is a first for me? Looks like there may be a marking below the catch plate?
    Opinions welcome

        Hi Steve,

Very interesting Wound Badge. I agree that the badge looks good, but it seems to me that your first question was not addressed. I have never seen a Black Wound Badge with a round catchplate like this either. It would be nice to see some more examples of this type if other collectors have actually seen them. It does look like there could be a marking below the catch. I see what looks like a very small number enclosed within a box. Can you post us a larger picture of that area?

        Thank you & best regards,
        Tom

            Hi Steve,

Although it appears like a marking, I think it is more likely just surface imperfections. Thanks for posting the additional picture.

            Best regards,
            Tom

I dug through my wound badges and found this example with a round catch base.

The badge itself is nonferrous; the hinge, catch, and pin are steel.

                Hi Tim,

Thank you for posting your example. Looks nice! Attachment hardware on yours is very "Wiedmann-like".

                Best regards,

                  Hi Steve,

I found a Silver Wound Badge with a hardware setup that I would say is identical to yours. See the following thread for more information.

                  http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...nn+wound+badge

The Silver Wound Badge shown in the linked thread is believed to be either a Deschler or a Wiedmann. I did a comparison below. Although the fronts are very different design-wise, the hardware looks exactly the same.

                  Best regards,
                  Tom

Also, the Silver Wound Badge pictured above looks to be the same obverse design as the Black Wound badge that Tim pictured in post #7.

                    Best regards,
                    Tom

I found a second example hanging on a uniform.

On this example, everything is nonferrous. Note how on the first example it has a brass-looking base metal while on the second example the base metal is gray - probably zinc.

But the attachment accouterments on the second example are brass even though they match up with the steel accouterments on the first example..

                        Very Interesting

                        Very Interesting observation Tom
Unfortunately the badge was only offered to me it is not mine and has since been sold to someone else so there will be no more pictures available for closer scrutiny. Whatever the case it seems to be an uncommon variant.
                        Cheers

                          Hi Tim,

Another nice example. Do you think that the base metal is brass on the first example you posted in post #7? The reason I ask is because it would be very unusual to have a catchplate on a Buntmetall badge. I think that one may be zinc-based too.

I found a third example in which the badge is from a different die but the hinge and catch match up with the original badge that started this thread.

This third example is made from brass, everything is nonferrous. It was originally a Black WB but all the paint has been removed from the front and almost all from the back.

Steve - I'm thinking Deshler. The hardware set up IMO matches the Deschler design.
