Silver coated Plaster wound badge?

    Silver coated Plaster wound badge?

    Hello all sorry my cameras down, but I just recieved a silver wound badge that is all chipped, and theres a plaster like compund inside that can chip away?

    Is this an obvious fake or something else?

    Hi Dan, this sounds very odd

    My initial thoughs are that this might be a black wound badge that has been stripped, and some kind of filler applied to make it flat backed and then repainted. If so this has been done to decieve. The pin would have to be removed if this is the case and a new one fitted. I must add that I have never seen this done, but I am just trying to think of a possible scenario to explain this odd badge.

    No original badge should have any kind of filler in it.

      I once recieved a grounddug Inf.Abz. wich I bellieved were a fake made of plastic. It was as you described chipped an you could see some kind of coulered plasticlike (almost seethrough) material. As it turned out the badge were completely original but suffered a kind of zinkpest wich turned the metalalloy into this plasticlike apperence.

      But as Ade suggested - I have seen a crude example of a woundbadge being amateurish filled and added silverpaint. I find this practise very rare because it involves an amount of time, knowhow, with no great valueincrease.

        Dan....if you could describe the pin and hinge assembley it would help. I have read that some original wound badges were made from an early form of plastic called Bakalite,but these are rare.

          Hi all,

          it could be the oxidation of the ( base ?) metal as mentioned (zink pest ??) similar to the corroision of aluminium just a thought .

            Its definatley not bakelight, but the oxidation makes sense.

                Hi,

                I have this type of heavy oxidisation on a couple of zinc Silver Wound Badges. I also used to own a zinc GAB with the same problem (that one looked ground dug though). The "corrosion" results in a plastic/plaster/putty type appearance and really eats into the zinc. I'm assuming it's only a certain type of zinc strored in a certain type of way that triggers the reaction.

                I've attached a scan of the affected areas on the wound badges. The left/reverse one only has it relatively lightly in a couple of areas but the right/obverse one has some fairly bad corrosion in patches - it's only in 2 or 3 areas on the badge but 1 of those areas (the one imaged) is VERY badly affected.

                        to me looks like a common metal fatigue. break down of the metal make up and ends up like a powder/chaulk like substance which is normal. i will try dig out one i have that show it well. otherwise the badge looks fine to me

                            Hi Dan,

                            this is just the oxidation of the metal, the one way to slow down / prevent further deterioation would be to appy clear nail varnish to the areas / badge (prevents air continuing the process) if you think it is worth it as the badge itself looks O.K. (JMO)
