    WB black - gold painted?

    hello all,

i need some help about this wound badge!
IMO it is a wound badge from maker wiedman
    because of the pin system.
Also i think it is a black one but this is one is with golden finsih

    What do you think?
Has someone repainted the badge postwar or genuine from wartime?

    kind regards burnout

Hmmmm. The badge is for sure real. The obverse almost looks like it was exposed to an open flame? The reverse looks believable. Do you actually see any black finish peeking through? Try the acetone test. TR paint is pretty tough and can stand up to acetone. I personally am a believer in mid-late war hollow back GWB's. Regards, Ron.

        I cannot say for sure!

But the gold finish looks very smooth. I will try to make more
detailed close up from the finish!

Is it right, at wartime exist hollow wound badges which
were gold plated and not repainted?
I thought to hear something about that sometime,
        This badges should be rar!

        kind regards burnout

Im no expert, but the edges looked dinged up, scraped and pitted. Yet still gold in that area. How was the gold applied? Cause if the edges are damaged, shouldnt the gold be scraped off? Is this a sign of a re-applied finish? But, why only do the back? Like I said, im no expert, but im trying to learn.

                Gwb?

What I can't understand is that if its a Re applied finish why would someone make sure the reverse is near mint but be sloppy on the obverse?
Could be a Good wartime finished Badge.

I think it is a good original badge. It is gold painted. Don't know why the front of the badge is worn in the manner that it is, almost artificially worn. As a side note though, I know a German vet who received the BWB and he told me he immediately scratched and scarred it up to look like he was an old salt. Who knows. Ron.

Gents, the finish on this badge is 100% correct. The front has probably got damp at some point. It is an original wound badge in gold- Deschler design, made in zinc. A super piece and actually very rare.

Nice deschler badge, but as stated by others the condition is not consistent...front is full of pest, then back is clearly a repaint , as the pitting on the back is full of paint, and if it were an original gold, it has been damaged by some nimrod who sprayed the back with new paint.....you will never find gold paint in pitting unless repainted....so regardless IF it were an orignal hollowback gold...it has now become just anoter farbed badge, and if you look at the points where the loops in tunics hold the badges, it would not have file marks like this one has, instead....just a shine...so I say, It isn't one I would want ever in my collection regardless if it is a deschler...or not...and once found should always be left as found, although it may have been farbed by the guy who sold it to this owner...If a badge is rusted , or pitted from water damage , it is better to not fool with it at all, and just protect it from then on...that way the finish can be attributed due to its provenance....but if it has no provenance and has gone through a few hands who think to add paint will fool the advanced collector. So buying from the vet isto me is the only way to tell on this kind of find...I will not agree on anything but only the fact that it has been messed with for sure, and so to me, is undesirable regardless of rarity...it pays to buy right, from the right people, and buy only items that have never been owned before by anyone but the vet...This is one reason I stress so much on recommending collectors move away from strictly buying from dealers, and occasionally go for the first hand hunt while there are still some vets left alive, then leave the stuff as found when the item will prove such theorys as hollowback gold wound badges...(it isn't that I do not believe they existed, it is just...this is the most difficult part of this hobby....keeping your mitts off things, even if in bad shape...the proof would be to dip it in acetone and remove the testors paint, or krylon whichever it is and then see what you have left)...
