Black wound badge too good to be true

HI all, I picked this up last week thinking it was mint and on impulse I bought it. I figured it was a safe bet because I haven't heard of these being faked all that often, plus it is mint. After looking at it a couple of things disturb me. First the edge of the badge is really high all around, 4mm compared to the 3mm on the rest of my black wound badges. Second, the hinge is placed much lower then I've ever seen before. Third, it's mint. Is this badge too good to be true? Let me have it . Greg

Is it me or is that badge silver?

It's the reflection from my scanner. The badge is a deep flat black. Sorry for the misrepresentation in the pic. The reverse pic gives the true color a little more accurately.

I would be interseted to hear comments about fake black wound badges as its not something that seems worth faking but I have seen 2 or 3 dubious looking ones over the past year or so - I know that copies of all Third Reich awards can be purchased on the net and I wonder if sometimes one or two get passed off as the real thing....any thoughts?

Black wound badges exist with a variety of setups and I have seen several with a similar short pin. I don't see anything that particularly worries me but saying that this wouldn't be a hard badge to fake.

              My concern would be...

... the lack of crispness on the swastika. It seems poorly defined for a period award???

                Hi,

Fakes are plenty and getting better outhere in any aspect of collecting, WBs are not the exception of the rule.

As for this WB i must say i don't like it at all, sorry
Not so good and accurate details with strange hing/catch assembly. Especially this kind of hinge is known on some fake solid WB's.

Greg, As for the edge you mentioned not all the WBs have the same 'high all arround' even sometimes if you have two indenticals awards by the same maker but the 4mm you mentioned only one maker comes in my mind -L/56- who is known for the 'high edges'

As for the hinge who is placed low, you can find original badges with applied low hinges and short pins.

For the mint condition, i have several mint black WB's in my collection and believe me they are all original

Hopes this helped you a little.
