BWB - Chaotic Dot Pattern with Copper Plating

    Hello All,

Here is another recent, "neat" find. I think this is my second (or, third?) chaotic dot pattern in the collection - I really like this one because of what appears to be evidence of a copper plating being applied prior to the black. Not sure if the extra plating helped with the adhesion durability of the final coating, but it sure adds an element of beauty to an already beautiful and noble award.

Comparing this example to my previous one posted at http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=357610 shows the pattern to be the same, although the hardware is different and the one in the older posting shows more wear.

    Enjoy,

    Eric

Nice one you've got but it hasn't a copper plating. What you see is the reaction of brass with oxyfen when the copper inside the brass alloy starts to get on surface.
          Best regards, Andreas

            Thanks, Andreas,

Oxidation is certainly a reasonable explanation, however, under a microscope (10-30X magnification) there is a distinct layer of copper sitting on top of the underlying brass/tombak. I would have to say that this example is one where there was a true copper plating applied. If I can get access to a microscope that can take pictures (used to have one in a lab I worked in) I will post those some day.

            Regards,

            Eric

              Hi Eric,

brass is only an alloy and copper is part of it. During the time it can happen that this copper starts to "move" on the surface and looks like an extra plating which it isn't.

Anyway a damned nice badge and i'm looking forward for photos of your USB microscope
              Best regards, Andreas

I found the third Chaotic Dot Pattern BWB I thought I had and here are those pictures. Under close scrutiny, the dot pattern is the same as the other two above.

                Enjoy,

                Eric
