      Rob,

That's very interesting. Is the base metal zinc or steel?

      Regards,
      Greg

Its only showing a little bit on the swaz and I cant tell.

I want to say it feels like steel, very heavy and smooth.
It first I wondered if someone had spray painted a gold WB,
but this thing is actually aged like this and there is no other layer present.

It is the first one I have ever seen.

                Al,

I believe I saw a hollow silver one on Thomas Huss' site.

Are you sure this is not a silver zincer that as turned black?
Looks like black paint on pin also

From the photos, I wound say that the badge is die-cast zinc.
                    Best regards! Tom Yanacek

Its a pretty basic fact that zink isnt magnetic and steel is,so why dont you put a magnet on it.
It also look like the black that kriegsmetall(late war zink) goes.
I have a silver one that has gone just like this.

Jeez, guys, havent you learned anything on this site? A 30 badge with makers mark placed above the catch and cast-in hinge and catch can only be a zinker.

I think it's just a silver one with all the silver finish gone.

                            silver with gold pin ???
I have silver zinc 30 - and pin is made of steel - not brass.....

but I also dont believe it to be a black badge... maybe silver (late zinc)... with replaced pin (from a brass black badge) and overpainted...

It is not uncommon to find silver zink badges with brass pins. But normally they are silver finished.
I have a steinhauer and luck zink silver wound badge(Diecast with cast in hinge and catch) with a brass pin and that is silver plated. It is also the original pin.
Manufacturers continued to use existing pin stocks past the changeover in 42 from brass to zink badge production.
That also doesnt look like paint on the pin but black tarnish(typical of brass) in the lower points in what looks like corrosion patches.
It looks like the pin was cleaned at some stage leaving only tarnish in the low points.
