A bit of work turned a wasted silver wounded badge into...

I got this banged up silver wounded badge the other day and decided to use some Autosol polish cream and a bit of work to clean it up.

I think the result is pretty amazing - thought you should see it

I would never do this to any badge in my collection.... it looked just fine the way it was, and in my opinion you ruined the badge......

Well, glad you like the result. And if you're happy...

But if you want a bit of criticism, this is kind of like re-bluing a matching Kriegoff or sharping a Japnese sword with a grinder, just takes away originality.

Being a bit of a hypocrite, but it seems restoration has the same principles. But with different objects...it could be the meaning of yin and yang.

miky y & Death-Ace: I naturally don't think one should ruin items - but restorration to the original condition is definitely OK. This is what I have done - and everybody does it !!!

Besides: It isn't attractive havin' a badge looking like it has been dug up yesterday as a display.

              Niblet: Thanks

You ruined a perfectly untouched badge that had a touch of age...
                What´s next - refinishing?

If you don´t like a badge like that then don´t buy it... there are better conditioned out there...it´s not harder than that!
                Regards

Don´t throw away your fake WB´s! Get in touch with me.
I collect them for reference purposes for the benefit of the hobby (for the right "fake" price of course).

The badge looked like s*** - and now it's like it originally was issued !!!

Besides: I got it for free and like it in it's orginal shape !!!

I KNEW that I shouldn't have posted the badge here - there are simply too many people who think they are so d*** knowledgeable and right

Polishing is not restoring a badge to original condition, you've just added a new and different finnish to the badge..... these zinc badges can never, and should never be restored. The only time I believe it okay to do anything to one of theses zincers, is when they need to be protected from rot........ And this is not the way to protect them from rot!............ All you've done is " cheaply" created an illusion of a nice new badge.....

Although I do not agree with what has been done I do understand it 100%.

The same thing can be said about people who gently wash tunics to remove 60 years of old crap and muck. Is that also not patina? At the end of the day the badge is his property and can do anything he wants to it.

Although I agree with leaving things the way they are, this statement is ultimately true.

There are TONS of badges just like this one out there for the rest of us who like them untouched. -If you are happy with it, that's all that counts.

I think criticism of OU812 is a bit harsh...whatever floats your boat and there are no rules to hobby collecting...it is not like he is scamming anyone by altering his own property.

I personally like well worn badges that show what is for me ' character ' while some like mint pieces. There is no right answer.

You see frequently that combat badges have repaired hinges and catches and this is done without anyone saying it is wrong to do (as long as you know when you buy one that this has been done).

OU812 if this is your thing than thanks for showing us your collection and enjoy.

                            Cheers,

                            Glen

You washed away a part of history of this badge...
