Imperial Wound Badges Help

Hi WB enthusiasts,

I'm interested in Imperial Wound Badges. I put this thread up in Imperial, but am copying it here as I understand Imperial WBs are discussed here as well (unlike the crosses forum). I would like to add one of each grade to my collection, but I don't know much about them.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on the ones I am posting below. These are the only photos the seller makes available (no reverses).

I've also got a few general questions. If anyone knows the answers and can post a few words, I would really appreciate it.

1) I like the "cut-out" versions. Were these ever award-types?
2) Are Imperial Wound Badges faked?
3) I've read that there are different "types," perhaps five. Can anyone let me know quickly how these types are distinguished?
4) Is there such thing as a solid (not stamped) but cut-out version?
5) Anything else I ought to know before taking the plunge?

The silver is priced at €56.



The black one is €40.

Hi. I am not too sure about the silver. I like the black.
1. I always thought cutouts were private purchase, at least for lower ranks.
2. Yes.
3.True. More than five. Obverse details such as helmet shape, sword and wreath styles.
4.Appearently. One knowledgable collector posted one recently on the WB forum.

So... has anyone ever done a comprehensive overview of the different types made? A thread here, or a book?

What do you think of the ones I just posted? Price and originality?

Although not perfect, Mr. Hamelman's book is excellent.

I'm not sure about the silver but I do like the black - reverse shots would be great (I don't know about "cut-out" prices but 56e seems a little steep).

Also, and this is just a guess, I would imagine that most "cut-outs" (since they were private purchase items) are post-war given the late institution of the wound badge in 1918.

Answered and my self as you listed:

1) Private and jeweler copies, mentioned also that high rank officers eligible of that type.
2) Yeap, every and any item has been faked.
3) Many variations in design by several mostly uknown makers.
4) Not official award
5) NEVER buy anything before do some homework and avoid dealers without detailed photos of front and back of the award, also any new item you can post it here for opinions and many knowledgable members will assist you.
