I bought myself a christmas gift also just before. BRRRT. Just kidding...hahah
Nobody wants to get caught with their pants down even if it were this guy ,not that it was... especially in front of many collectors, except the older experienced collectors who are more apt to admit stuff like that .. to help others and prove we all have made mistakes in the past...thats how you learn.
Im sure there is no one here that cast the first stone ...who hasnt been there once in a decade or two, as even i have(not saying the owner is the guilty party).
I do feel the source of the badge not being stated is granted...suspicious , as to why the answer could not given as to the source is beyond me. Thats whats bad about buying offline, its a small world..thats why i buy privately(Like a pause after a pointed question by a spouse to think up a good answer) Always looked on as suspicious , but maybe he was just off line....maybe he will reveal the source later.maybe not.who cares.
I could never fathom a gift giver would clean a badge before giving it , but would leave that to the recipient, as in my experience ..most people who buy a gift for a collector have no reason to do so, as most know little about these type items . Usually the gift giver hears the recipient say I would really like to have that, but i cant afford it..."Then to make the recipient happy , they do just that.
Too bad some "nimrod "cleaned this SWB, i would not suspect the seller or it would have gone back if any dealer ever touched a badge posted with a patina after i purchased it. Fo Sho..
This will more than likely remain a mystery , as The patina is what makes the badge show its age.
I do hope someone gained something from reading about this badge being fooled with by someone who just made a bad decision...so Merry christmas .You cant take a badge thats 65 years old worn in battle , and make it look new, it does the owner , and the badge a great disservice in reduction of value .
(disclaimer to be spoken very fast under your breath .... like at the end of a car commercial regarding financing terms: none of the comments were directed to the present owner as the guilty party , all comments were just objective for educational purposes for novices for future reference)

      Greetings all......

......I'd like to address this issue of cleaning badges.

First of all there seems to be only two camps involved:
      • Those that clean
      • Those that don't
You cant take a badge thats 65 years old worn in battle , and make it look new, it does the owner , and the badge a great disservice in reduction of value .

Personally I disagree with the above statement. I am one of those 'nimrods' that does clean badges. I do, however, favor the method of gently cleaning my possessions. Not cleaning them by using a commercial buffer, or wire brush to do so. I think they look great with a nice shine. And that doesn't mean a attempt to make them look new, but sometimes the reult is spectacular.

If I wanted patina I'd go to the thrift store, and start collecting spoons or something of that sort.

I can honestly say that my veteran buddies wouldn't dream of wearing their awards in a tarnished or dirty condition....out of respect to the award and their fellow soldiers.

I do not think ill of Juoneen, or any that share his opinion. I merely put forth that we would agree to disagree. At least I hope that would be the case.
