GWB mm L 54

Despite that double struck makermark i can´t see anything wrong with that L/54 GWB.

Funny though this is the second L/54 GWB i see this weekend.
The other was in better condition and scratched with "Stalingrad 13.1.1945", i would have bought it if it wasn´t for the odd and unexlainable date and place...

The scratching doesn´t make any sense to me although the badge it self is good.

Rylan, as has already been said the GWB looks good

I like the double struck maker mark, it adds character - how many L/54 GWBs will you see with that? - Not many. If the price was right, I'd snap up that badge.

Hans, as I'm sure you know - the only reason I think the Stalingrad scratching is on the rear is that someone has tried to give the badge "history" and increase it's value/saleability at some point - I am not suggesting that Markus Schulze did this, he is far too honest and I am certain would not deface a badge. I too would pass on this due to the false "history" - it's a shame/disgrace to deface a badge like this.

Yes I agree, nice badge but the fake 'history' would put me off. I guess there could be a perfectly legitimate story behind it -If only badges could talk

Thanks for the replies, good to hear it is a good badge. I too thought that the double stamped maker mark was pretty cool, it's very unique.

I highly doubt this was scratched in to fool anybody. If you know that a scratching in the back would make it more valuable, and if you know that it should be Stalingrad, you know the exact data of the battle. This makes it for me really unlikely. I think there is something behind this, I wasted my whole evening contemplating about this, but couldn´t get a clue...(damn you, militaria dealers! ).

Daniel, I'm certain the dealer has nothing to do with the scratching on the WB.

I have encountered quite a few items where incorrect information has been added to a piece, sometimes this has occured because a owner of a piece has believed that a piece originates from a certain place/time and they mark the piece accordingly. They do not always know the accurate history of the period.

With this WB, there is also the possibility that the WB was found in Stalingrad in 1945, but I doubt that when we are considering it is a Gold WB.

With hindsight, there is possibly nothing sinister in the markings on the WB. One way to find out more might be to talk to Markus and see if he knows anything about the origins of the WB and maybe some of it's history - but thats a very big longshot.

I did not mean a dealer did this, nor did I understand it this way. I think Markus would have mentioned it in his sales text, if he knew what this scratching means. Really a mysterious piece.

Daniel, sorry I miss understood what you were saying.

The contemplating/thinking about items is one of the many interesting aspects of these items; rattling the mind as to why/where/when just leads to more research and understanding - and some confusion
