    Gold Wound Badge

    Hello all,
    Whilst on holiday recently in Germany I was offered a gold wound badge, complete with the original owner's Urkunde, for five wounds.
    The badge itself looks to my eye to be an original fire gilt badge.
    However; the reverse does not have a pin, but a screwback which was described to me as being done postwar.
    As I do not have a scanner or digital camera I am unable to post pictures of the badge, but has anyone ever come across a similar type of badge?
    The screwback is a ring of copper approximately 1.25 centimeteres across and from wear it looks to have been done many years ago.
    My question is who would undertake the the work on such a badge, as it appears to be of quite high quality - possibly a jeweller?
    The Urkunde is to a Feldwwebel in Stabkomp. Gren. regt. 1 who was awarded th badge for wounds sustained on: 26.4.42, 1.8.43, 22.10.44, 21.1.45 and lastly 3.3.45.
    The certificate was signed and stamped on 12.3.45 in the field.
    I realise that without pictures of the award or certificate members are in the dark; but has anyone else ever seen such a badge in their collecting experience?

    interesting, personally I would steer clear of anything other than a textbook example. However, I don't see why an individual shouldn't have modified his badge or maybe a jeweller mod' to a broken badge??
    It would be nice if you could post a pic.

      Without pics of the GWB in question it is very hard to pass comment. That said, as Neil pointed out - individuals have been know to modify their badges. But caution is required with screwback WB's.

        As far as I know, no maker made a screw back for the 1939 conflict.
        I have seen badges where a screw has been added.It is quite posible that the badge in question has had one added.Not sure about a private perchase.Would love to see a shot of the badge.

          Hi,

          Only having the "story" to go from, I find too many anomalies.

          1) Gold WB earned in 1945 but a fire-gilt badge is described - I would have expected zinc.
          2) the alteration is said to have been done post-war. I assume the badge still had it's swas, so why alter a badge when it could NOT legally be worn?

            Hello all,
            thanks for your input.
            I will purchase after the Christmas period a reasonable digital camera and scanner in order to post pictures on the forum.
            This is obviously needed here in order to take a full part in further forum activities.
            The badge itself (to my untrained eye) seems to be a fire gilt example with no maker mark and where the hinge would have been is a 'spike' for fixing the award into cloth and the centre of the reverse has a small (compared to EK1 period examples) screwback.
            The front retains the swastika and has two very slight chips to the gilt finish.
            Hopefully I will in the near future have the equipment to post pictures for a definitive opinion on the badge.
