Hello Marcus,

I'm thinking that your brass L/11 Wound Badge in Black is ok. I really don't see anything wrong with it, although I don't have one similar to compare it to. As you mentioned, this type of simple hinge set up was definitely used during the Third Reich. This same type of simple hinge was also used by Dr. Franke & Co., Lüdenscheid, on their Infantry Assault and Panzer Assault Badges.

Every piece is meaning something to the collector but in this case it will be better to get another sure original L/11 WB Greg and have piece on your mind, besides is quite common WB.

Yes, I think you are right Chris. Better to know it's good then to wonder . This badge really did sneak up on me though, The hinge is not something too out of the ordinary compared to say an FCL or FLL IAB and the details seem good, but there is something odd about how bright the base metal is and the overall "feel" of the badge is off. I will search for another textbook L/11. Thanks to all

Hello to ALL:

I was careful to state in the other recent L/11 BWB thread, that my judgements regarding the "Unique Hinge" L/11 were based upon my best current understanding regarding real vs reproduction. As an IAB collector, I was aware of the FCL usage of this type of hinge, and I had seen the hinge on period KVKs and a Spanish Cross that Frank H posted some time back.

As I stated before, I've seen an awful lot of these "unique hinge" L/11s....with varying degrees of wear....sometimes very convincing wear.

I took some time (probably far too much some might say) to take a harder look at my L/11 BWB photo files.

The ones bearing the unique hinge that Marcus and Greg recently posted (along with the others I took a look at) all seem to share two features. They show a hint of the extra berries found on the L/11 design, and they share a similar maker mark which features a short leg L, and numbers one with a short upswing to the numerals. All are of brass basemetal.

When examining the accepted block hinge and standard hinge setup BWBs, I noticed variation in the degree to which one can or cannot see the extra berries, and some differences in maker marks.

Here come a batch of photo comparisons....for what it is worth. First up the comparison of maker marks found on the L/11s bearing the unique hinge.

These berries are quite clear on my brass block hinge L/11, and are naturally very distinct on my tombak SWB.

On the examples with the unique hinge posted by both Marcus and Greg, I can make only make out the faint hint of the berries in question. Here is Marcus' composite badge photo.

On Ronny's block hinge example, there is a real up upswing to the numbers one in the maker mark, and a longer leg to the letter L. I can see no trace of the berries on this one. I'm sure as production continued, this particular detail could have been become more faint or lost.

On a Bill Shea's block hinge example, I see very little upswing to the numbers one, and short legs to the letter L (it looks like the mark found on the unique hinge badges). This one just has a hint of the extra berry on the right.

Grimjaur's steel badge with the standard hinge, has a distinct berry next to the hilt on the left, and the maker mark once again has a long legged L, and a long upswing to the numbers one.
