Gau Thueringen & Golden Party badge

    Hi all,

just got these two badges recently. They are said to be from the same owner. Is it possible to track him down with the number on the badges ?
    Are they all ok ?
What makes me wonder on the party badges is that it seems to be thinner were the number is engraved, especially on the right edge looking at the back. They must have been grinded out at least a part of the number and corrected it maybe ?

    My best, Jens

Your welcome Jens, sorry no more info on him other than he was from Fröbersgrün.

Both pieces are original to the period and both were awarded to the same person, whose name was spelled Reinhold Mohener or Reinhold Mossner. In June of 1933 Gau Thüringen issued a list of GPB holders resident in that Gau and those who held the Thüringen Silver Eagle award; the holder of GPB Number 39734 was "Reinhold Mohener," who also held Silver Eagle Number 799. On December 31, 1937 Gau Thüringen published an updated version of this GPB list, and in this version the holder of GPB Number 39734 was "Reinhold Mossner;" no Silver Eagle numbers were included in this version of the list.

We have occasionally seen examples of the GPB in both sizes which appear to have had their lower reverse area filed down and a new number stamped or engraved onto that area. The base metal on the lower section of such badges are noticeably thinner than the upper areas on the same badges. There is no doubt in my mind that the large GPB you show here is an original piece; what is still unclear is why the NSDAP Treasurer's Office would have gone to the trouble of having returned GPBs 'erased' and renumbered when the cost of new badges was only RM1.50 or RM2.50 each...?

I don't like the party badge...

Absolutely original GPB, well worn. I have to say this is the first one I've seen with the back ground down to that extent. Usually any grinding is pretty light, but they really went at that one, including cutting into the bottom of the pinplate so that part of it is gone too.

Fantastic set - especially the Silver Eagle.

Nothing wrong with the GPB. Like sjl mentioned.

Many thanks for the clarification, Martin M! My copy of the Gau Thüringen document is a copy of a copy, and even under magnification, the Fraktur schrift is still indistinct.

                              Happy Holiday, my friend,
