Really? I have a feeling that a plausible explanation has been given in the past but unfortunately don't know where I read it.

There is a very interesting article in "Military Advisor" winter 2016/2017 by Members Wim Vangossum and Joe Wotka re the FM subject. Most enlightening.Found it best I have read on FM even comes with pics.! Seiler

There is still no clear explaination about those letters. One theory is that they were there to keep the serial numbers not too long and another theory that they were contract numbers.
