    BDM Day Badge????

    Hello all.

I am trying to identify this badge. I believe its BDM related and I guess a day badge. I am away from my books at present so I cannot research. I have seen the symbol before, but cannot remember what it is - any help would be greatly appreciated. The lace work on the badge is intact and very detailed. With the figures at the bottom being youthful, I am thinking lace would not be on a HJ badge but of course BDM. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
    It has no maker mark.
    Cheers Dave H.

    Nsv

    National Sozialistische Volkswohlfahrt.
The NSV, National Sozialistische Volkswohlfahrt, (National Socialist People’s Welfare Organization), was an NSDAP affiliated organization formed in May 1933 from personnel of the preceding DVD. Deutscher Volkswohl Dienst, (German Social Welfare Service), instituted by Otto von Bismarck. The NSV was responsible for a wide range of Social services including the WHW, Winter Hilf Werk, (Winter Assistance Work), and worked closely with the DRK, Deutsches Rotes Kreuz, (German Red Cross).
    Hopes this helps.Regards Pete

Pete's response is right on the money! Quite an unusual piece, in my experience, though the NSV logo was widely used.

          Thanks again.

I am wondering why the lace design was used, if mass produced very time consuming and why go to all that trouble?? Many questions and the answers lost in time. Certainly would like to know if anyone else has seen a badge with similar lace work.

          Cheers

          Dave H.

            i guess

            Hi there .
I can only guess these were a tinnie but a nice one.
They would have been more expensive to produce and I guess the buyer was charged accordingly .Worn as a more fancy looking piece
I have seen these before but not that often .
over all these years the lace will get damaged or moth eaten (devils ) .
All that said it is agreat piece and shows people reaching out for help.
That was what the NSV was all about.
            Great piece.
            Regards Pete

Perhaps the fine lacework is there to suggest that the NSV operates through a network -- a web -- across the country and is able to respond to needs expressed from many origins? Just a thought on a very unusual piece.

It`s not a network, it`s the sun and sunbeams, a widly used symbol at thta time...

                    Hi gents,

All replies to this thread right on the money!
NSV tinnie, with sunbeams radiating from the NSV symbol; this was commonly used on postcards with a swastika "sun" coming over a clouded horizon and breaking through to shine light on a town etc.
There is also an A4 Reichspost fancy telegram where the swastika sun is pushing back cloud "fists" to shine on Germany, a common theme of the times.
Also, many tinnies were produced in areas which had traditional handicrafts such as leather production, lacemaking, ceramics etc - and these skills were used to produce badges which reflected the communities in which the badges were manufactured.
Several WHW "tinnies" have lace in there construction, hand painted and wood carved items are also frequently found and almost any medium is used to attract people to support a cause.
Unfortunately, the NSV would refuse to help anyone who was not considered as "belonging" to the "Peoples Community" you can guess who these people were!
So not a happy situation for a large proportion of the German populace.

                    best wishes,

                    John.

Thanks John - fantastic background information on this little badge. The mentality of the time of the TR is a fascinating subject. Thanks to all again for the help on this badge
