Haven't we recently seen this Fuess-marked badge, or another badge with this same odd runic-style numbering? The number is not ID'd on my list.

Yes, unless I'm mis-remembering, our colleague Stephen -- whose website on the subject of the GPB is a fundamental reference source -- commented at the time that this unusual style of runic numbering is authentic to the period.

perhaps the original number was erased this "new" number a replacement number,,I remember That the late John Peppera was interested in obtaining it,,,

I seem to recall that one of the GPBs auctioned as part of John Pepera's holdings had a number inscription like this one, though I don't now recall the exact number.

And, come to think of it, it seems that we have seen this piece before. Now looking at it more carefully, someone opined at that time that it looks like the lower half of the badge's reverse may have been ground down, which would have been done to accommodate the removal of a previous number and the re-numbering of this piece.

Memory is certainly a tricky thing...!
