SA Sports Badge....how far off am I?

    Hello
A while ago a friend of the family asked me what this badge was and I told her it was an SA Sports Badge. After, she asked an "expert" and he reassured her it wasn't a sports badge....she couldn't remember what it was but she knew he said it was something for some high official......

Anyway, I'm not an expert on German badges but I'm not "special" either so I would like my facts checked before I tell her again!

This is the Type I issued between March 1934 and January 1935 as can be seen by the marking under the pin, "EIGENTUM D. CHEFS D. AUSBILDUNGSWESENS"...Property of the Chief of Training Staff.

BONNER KUNSTABZ. is the maker mark and I assume the other is the city he is in?

The S/N indicates this would have been issued a bit later in 1935 as only about 166,000 of the first type badge were issued.

Even with an serial number it's not really possible to track down who the badge was awarded to (I assume).

This is the part I am most unsure of, the first badges were awarded thus: Bronze for competitor, Silver for Instructor, Gold for Judge. It was later that they were awarded for physical fitness requirements? I may be way off here.

I'm not sure if this badge is bronze or gold, the finish on the front shows wear and you can see a darker bronze color underneath but it really isn't what I would call a gold color. I know it's really hard to determine color on these from a photograph.

Thank you very much for everyone who has posted info on these in the past, I really did learn a lot.

Any help, input, or corrections would be greatly appreciated!

    Eric

This is a little better picture of the finish on the back, I would say it's just slightly darker.

what you have is a what looks like a high issue number gold SA sports badge. they came in four types , bronze, silver, gold and one for war wounded. the criteria i believe is the same as for all sports badges. the owner would of had to achieve certain levels of achievment on the sports field and the badge would of been backed up by his sports record book. hope this helps

If it's any help, the color isn't anywhere close to the bronze page at the top of the Tinnies page.

Thanks for the link to your information Roman. I thought that I had read in another thread that the later issues were awarded for that. You all are the experts so I'll go with what you all say!

Thanks again guys, I really appreciate the help and comments.
