This is the logo of the DZR, the Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei or German Airship Shipping Company, which existed from 1935-1940 and whose only airships were the Graf Zeppelin, the Hindenburg and the Graf Zeppelin II. Many artifacts of this period include this logo, including tableware, china and letterhead.
The Zeppelin Company may have been created in 1935, but it was part of German life in the years before. I had this armband for many years and wondered always what the date signified. Finally I got off my duff and wrote the city archive of Hannover what they could tell me about it. The ink stamp on the armband is for the Polizei Prasident in Hannover.
The city archive replied that on that date an airshow was held at the airfield Hannover-Vahrenwald to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Technical High School of Hannover. Tens of thousands of people attended and the two high points of the show were the flying of air pioneer Willy Beinhorn and the landing of the airship 'Graf Zeppelin'. Will not able to produce documentation from police authorities, the archive thought the armband was used by the civil authorities at the air show.
There were other instances of zeppelins making public appearance flights to broaden the public perception of their service. A PPK was auctioned off some years past that was presented as a gift to the commander of the airship.
