The personality pieces are very expensive.

Hundreds of dollars in some cases!

                        Hi Ralph

I must admit I do not know anything about these so you will have to forgive my stupid questions. I take it these are made out of lead? Are these common or rare ie like war period Britains? Are they are to get hold of and when you can are they expensive?
                        Regards

                          Hello Simon,
They're composition (wood pulp/sawdust mixed with glue over a metal armature) material and hand painted. The standard soldiers aren't too expensive--usually $15.00 or so if in average condition. The equestrian pieces, personality figures, DE bearers, etc. are more, and in some cases, much more expensive.

Thanks for the information, you learn something new everyday on this forum

I am therefore surprised a little, seeing the way they where made how well these have kept without little or no damage.

Sorry about the stupid questions, where these manufactured through some sort of molding/stamping process, I would have thought too mass produced to be hand made?
                            Regards

                              Simon,

The figures were molded in the factory, and all of the figures were hand painted. Perhaps some of the painting was done at the factories, but at least part of it was a cottage industry... families that lived around the factory would earn money by painting the figures.

Lineol, one of the makers of these toys, also used prison labor. Erich Honecker, who became the leader of East Germany, worked on these toys when he was imprisoned during the war.

                              Regards,

                              Fred
