Eagle Order 4th Class ....information wanted

German Eagle Order breast cross 4th Class with swords...can anyone tell me what the "8" stamped on the top of the hinge block signifies...maybe a piece part maker code...?

A recent acquisition and noticed during inspection with a loup....it is definitely an '8' stamped in there...

    Thanks in advance

In the absence of more information, I am inclined to think any of these theories:

1-It is a mark attributed to the workshop that was responsible for making this badge ... something like a number or code workshop.

2-It is a trademark of manufacturer attributed to a particular craftsman workshop Godet where these pieces were made.

3-It is a brand of another manufacturer, in this case hinged at one of the workshops commissioned Godet hinges to put their pieces at that time have not own hinges. Sometimes, manufacturers came to material from other manufacturers to add their own decorations to avoid having to make hinges, needles and closures...

I have never seen this type of mark on fresh copies nor seen documentation about so I can not say anything about it .... I guess it's a mystery as the markings of the Order third class period 1939-1945:confuso:

Any chance it could be a rendition of "S"?

Jim, as Marisca notes, it is a full punched '8'....very interesting when you think of the later versions of the 1st class having a '3' and the 3rd class having a '5' for class indication....when I first saw it I personally thought, and mentioned to Marisca, that it could be a piece part makers mark, or as has been mentioned, even an inspectors mark such as you see on swords, firearms, etc....definitely an anomaly for sure....would be good to see if others with a 4th class could inspect theirs and let us know...

I checked my copy of the fourth class without swords and my second class of 1937 first design-first type and in any of the two appears.

I also looked at all the pictures that I have seen copies on the internet and I have not seen anything like it anywhere.

The copy of Pink is a rare example without a doubt ..
