    Pathetic Tinnies

    Hi guys,

I spotted these sorry-looking, fake tinnies on an upcoming auction. For the most part, tinnie collecting has been a fairly safe haven. But now it seems that even some very common tinnies are being faked. Although these pieces will not fool an experienced tinnie collector, they are sure to end up duping some newer collectors. What a shame!

    Best regards,
    Tom

Hi Tom, not surprised if made in China, they even fake the Hindenburg cross and how many million real ones are out there. TPK

          Hi,

A real shame that these common tinnies are now being faked, a real blow to new collectors in the community.
Fair enough, they are easily spotted by a more experience eye, but many may be taken in by these fakes - losing interest when they realise they are not original.
This hobby is totally blighted by these people who constantly forge TR items, and here in the UK most auction houses will not touch TR items; as they do not have people with the experience to determine fakes.
Therefore original relics usually do not come up for sale in UK auctions - and those that do are often crude fakes anyway!
A sad state of affairs in the UK, and I suspect on an international basis.

          Best wishes,

          John.

Here is a fake of a not so common tinnie. This one looks much more convincing but is still a fake. I bought this one from an online auction. The pictures were not the best and I didn't scrutinize it enough, so I ended up with a piece of junk. The detail on the front is actually very good. Most of the telltale signs of fakery are noted on the reverse. Tweer & Turck did manufacture this type of tinnie, but they were struck from iron and should therefore be magnetic. The piece I received was non-magnetic and made from a soft, cast metal. I was surprised that the fake measured spot on to an original. I did not note any smaller dimensions due to shrinkage inherent to the casting process. The pin is not correct either: the pin point is exposed (no safety bends) and the pin is not long enough as this type of tinnie always had a much longer pin. If you look to where the red arrow points, you will see that the metal was actually melted by a soldering iron or other tool during the pin attachment. After examining the piece in hand and noting my concerns I decided to give the piece the bend test. It bent easily with mere finger pressure so I continued bending it back and forth until I broke it up into small parts. Another fake bites the dust!

            Best regards,
            Tom

              more crap

Here is some more tinnie garbage. And this seems to be the latest craze in fake tinnies: felt-backed tinnie crap. There seems to be a lot of this crap popping up on auctions these days.

              Best regards,
              Tom

Oh dear, if the time has come that you have to check every die flaw on a tinnie, just to feel safe. How many variants do you need to memorize...
