Autobahn Award and Urkunde

The wonderful thing about the MAX Show is finding something you have seen or heard of. This wonderful set was in the collection of a far away friend and it is time for him to sell things. He knew of my desire for unusual things, so he held it for me. The frame is old and was probably framed during the period.

At last, a complete Urkunde that I can easily read!!!!

If it is in Germany, it must be along the first 1000 Km (predating the plaque) somewhere between Frankfurt and Breslau? I assume.

High folks, what a great item. This looks like the old Lahntalbrücke in Limberg. This bridge was built in 1936-1937 as part of the autobahn system. Here's a couple of other views of its construction. The bridge roadbed was laid on top of the spans. This bridge was replaced I think in 2013.

Geof, thanks for the reply, which looks to be spot-on. What a marvel of engineering. I assume from the name that it is over the River Lahn.

Yes that's right. It was blown by the Wehrmacht on the night of the 26th March 1945. In 1949 the Germans rebuilt the 219m gap with a steel spar span which was in place until the 60's when they built a stressed cement replacement. The latest bridge is very modern and boring. It was a shame that the 1936 bridge was destroyed as it failed to hinder the US forces at all and it was such a lovely example. The bridge was at the time of its building the most expensive bridge ever built in Germany.

Strange to see it being called a medal as it clearly is a plaque. I do like the setup. The writing does confirm what i've been thinking and discussing with a few friends for ages, thanks for showing.
