The better photos in post #29 show without any doubt that badge No. 233 is a cast fake.
The back of the eagle's head on my badge No. 391 is flat rather than as well detailed as No. 226, but this is the result of hand-finishing and I have seen the same thing on other original Gau Wartheland badges in private collections. That is to say that both "flat" and "cutout" backs of the eagle's head are correct (IMO).
Chris Ailsby mentioned to me today that these badges were made by Souval. This may be correct although some were found in boxes with the name "Godet" inside the lid so perhaps there were two manufacturers. This could explain the two different types.
