    Help with NSFK Enamel Pins

I posted a few of my enamel pins in the "Collections" forum, but the following NSFK pins have always made me wonder. I've been told these have been reproduced.

Any help authenticating them would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

These badges have been reproduced and fairly well. it is my understanding that these were brought in to the USA enmasse a number of years ago by a European dealer known for dealing in masse quantities of reproductions. The rumor was that a large number of blank original plates were found and that the enamel work was done in Eastern Europe. Possibly some other Forum member knows more about these. Unfortunately, I have also heard it is almost impossible to tell originals from the reproductions due to the base plate being period.

I have heard the same rumor that Bob mentions. Here are some images of some NSFK pins in my collection. These are absolutely original -- and the reason I know this is they were presented to me as a gift some years ago by a Luftwaffe veteran who had kept them since 1938 when he flew in these NSFK model competitions.

The one thing I notice in comparing these originals to what I think are reproductions is the definition of the Icarus figure. Note how in the originals the face and body features are rather well defined. It's about the best you can do in these cases, I am afraid. Needless to say, I am delighted I have these in my collection, given to me by an old friend who later went on to fly the Junkers JU-88 and the ME-262. He also gave me his pilot's badge a couple of years later.

This one does not feature the Icarus figure as above but the workmanship is outstanding --- the photos do not do it justice.
