Bronze 1932 HJ Postsdam badge, ok?

    Hello,

    Is this bronze variant original?
It is marked: 'Hoffstätter Bonn' and 'Ges. Gesch' (Gesetzlich Geschutzt).
Please correct me if I am totally wrong, but is it true that Hoffstätter was the only company to manufacture these badges?

Kind Regards and many thanks for your help,

    Maarten

I have seen this badge and several similar others on the same website all with the same strange finish. I think they may have been painted, I do not like them. Hofstatter were the only makers and there are several diff types by the same maker. There are enough around to find a better one.

THe badge in itself is good IMO. About the finish... I don´t know. I need to have it in my hands to give you an opinion.

        Hello Siegfried and Gregorio,

        Thank you for your replies.
I'm affraid I don't have more photos of it.
It looks like it is painted bronze. Is this a good sign?
Perhaps it is for the best to wait for a better perhaps less dubious one.

There is also a silver 1932 HJ Postdam Abzeichen for sale that has a very strange marking. The mark on this one is more or less on the same position as on the aluminium one but this time is is stamped in the material. Although I'm not much of an expert on these badges, I don't believe this silver one to be orignal.

        Best Regards, Maarten

Personally Maarten I would wait for a better one - the bronze ones tend to retain their finish better and are therefore more plentiful if you want a good one. As for the silver, it has taken me a good couple of years to track down a near mint one. The finish on these seems to wear more than the bronze so they are more difficult to find.

It depends on which type you want, and how long you are prepared to wait and how much effort you are prepared to put in to find one! Good luck.

            Hello all,
Was reading this thread and saw the comment about hoffstatter being the only manufacturer of this badge. I have a silvered Potsdam badge by Hermann Aurich and this is the first time I have heard about hoffstatter being the only maker. I have shown this item to various collectors and even posted on a few forums & never got negative response. I have attached a picture of my badge & appreciate any info or comments.
            thanks,
            Duzig(Bill)

I also was under the impression that Aurich marked badges were OK.

                Hello,
Thanks for your comment Wood. I also was under the impression that aurich badges were accepted as good.

I agree with Pete & Bill..... Hermann Aurich also manufacturered the Badge. Time permitting I will post my examples Tommorow. The Aurich examples are without doubt scarcer, hence one is more likely to encounter Ferdinand Hoffstätter examples.
Bill your example is a genuine period example, one can even see the traces of the original finish which is identical to the finish sometimes encountered on the Hoffstätter examples.
Bill if you weigh your Aurich Badge it should be the same weight as a Hoffstätter maker marked Badge since it is the same metal
                    Regards Martin

                      Hello again all,
Thanks for all your comments. I am glad to hear that these were manufactured by aurich also. It's nice to know that collectors have a forum such as this where good reliable information is available.
                      thanks,
                      Bill
