The clasp attachment system seems questionable as I've seen almost all with pinback. Was this used?

I believe the one on the right (with the 2 prongs) is an original HJ cap insignia.

Yes. The one on the right is the cap insignia.

The pin assembly for the one on the left looks correct for that maker.
