So if I read this right, when you lost your Hoffstätter you had to buy the silver Gahr?

      Ss za.

Then why do the Files in Berlin state clearly, when asked by
Dr Brandt on behalf of Himmler "How many each produced till
      the end"
Hoffstatter state in writing "Production ****** PLUS ****
replacement pins for LOST or DAMAGED".
      Gahr ,state **** No extras.
      ???
      Seiler.
      PS
I have pin #1 from Gahr made for presentation to AH by Himmler.
The pins from each Maker ARE different one from the other in
dimension and materials. The lock is in SILVER.
The price is clear on the Purchase Order as per REGS.which I have
a copy of with cover letter.

Thanks to G Hanson for providing photos of his Gahr stickpin, and of the case, as well. On the surface I don't see any difference between this Gahr and the Hoffstätter in my collection...though mine didn't come with a beautiful case. And from the mere presence of the fine case, this stickpin is clearly intended to be more than just a nice lapel pin that any SS member could buy and wear on his civvies.

        A great thread!

          Hi Joe,

Thanks for your offer, which G. Hanson provided very kindly. I'm glad to hear that you worked with John Pepera to draft an essay on this exact subject for publication in "Military Advisor" -- can't wait to read it! I'm sure it will be an excellent addition to the archive on our hobby, and since John worked with you on the article, this could be one way of showing our gratitude to him as he assisted you in one last contribution to our knowledge of the TR era. A very fitting memorial, I'd say!

Many thanks, as always, my friend,

          Br. James

Seiler, I am not quite sure to what statements your comment was directed. From the Mai 1944 letter, I do not see where either of the two manufacturers were quoted, only the report of production of both directed to Dr. Brandt.

And again we have different interpretations that could be used in a translation. My dictionary, a small Langenscheidt's, provides the meanings "replacement" and "substitute". In this instance, the Gahr pins were both: a substitute for someone who wished a higher quality pin and would pay the additional funds, or as the only replacement available for one lost.

Mein Gott, you have SS-ZA #1? With the small wooden box in which Himmler kept the pin? Where on earth did you find that piece?
