    Gau Baden in Silver

Fresh off the plane- Gau Baden in Silver.
I was always wondering if the hardware between this pin and Gau Essen in silver was a tell-tale of same manufacturer or perhaps they both sourced those from the same distributor. Or perhaps one of the two was the supplier. They look spot on- the folded over hinge, shepherds pin and one sided 'safety style' catch. Even the sizes are apparently the same. Anyone ever seen a packeted Gau Essen perhaps?
    cheers
    Matt

        Hi Matt,

You could be right in thinking that the same manufacturer was involved with both of these badges, though the hinging mechanism does not appear to be identical between the two examples you provide. The hinge mechanism on the Gau Baden piece is reminiscent of those found on many SA Sport Badges, especially with regard to the hinge itself being merely a twisted wire mounted through the hinge bar base and utilizing the end of the pin wire as a sort of a "stop" or "catch." The hinge on the Gau Essen piece was fully wrapped around the hinge bar base, forming a permanent unitized connection. Hope these observations are helpful. Cheers,

        Br. James

          hardware comparison

Thanks for your input James. I must apologize for my terrible photography skills.
The 'hinge' itself seem to be the same variety (flat steel bar that has been bent to "U" shape and drilled for the pin to go through it). You are of course right about the small barrel pin. On one badge it is a simple wire going through the barrel, on the other it has rather large 'head' on one side.
The catches on both examples are identical. I have not seen the 'safety' catch on any other pins I examined. It is the type that can only be closed on one side. I found those rather unique.
The pins although not obvious from my photos are the same shape 'shepherd hook' variety as well. It is visible on Baden, not so much on Essen but it is there as well.
          cheers

No apology necessary, Matt...your photography skills FAR outclass mine, which are NIL! Thanks for your further details.

              Very Nice Awards.

Congrats Matthew on some very nice Awards you picked up.
The Silver Gau Baden is another excellent NSDAP Badge added to your ever growing Nest of the Eclectic.
I noticed that the pin and hardware setup on both awards is also seen on a lot of Red Cross, Rad pins and Brooches and others for Female attire.

                .

Thank You Pete for your kind words. You are absolutely right- this type of pin/hinge setup has been used on the pieces you mentioned. Few other companies also used similar catches - L.Chr. Lauer comes to mind (Motorsposts Badges among others). What is unusual on these is that "extra leg" on the catch part that makes it possible to open/close only on one side.
Granted- I don't get out much but short of saying 'they don't have those on anything else' I can honestly say it's first for me.
                Thanks for your input Gentlemen!
                cheers
                Matt
