Hi Forseti,

I agree with John G: this is an example of the 3rd Issue of the SA Sport Badge series known as the SA Military Defense Badge (SA-Wehrabzeichen), this one being in the Bronze Grade. It appears to be a genuine piece, though it has had a hard life! The 3rd Issue of this series was awarded during the war years and materials were scarce and often lightly-applied, therefore the colored finish did not hold up as well on this issue as it did on the two earlier issues.

It is an original SA defence badge bronce grade and not made from brass.
All SA sport badges from number ~316 000 and all SA defence badges were made from iron sheet and should be magnetic

here some badges to compare - pictures are not so good as in real, the gold grade is very shiny and is not polished, it is fire gold plated
