Original. Supposedly a miniture of the larger badge for women. The lock is pecular to this badge and is the sure sign of an original.

Is this really gilt, or is it old silver that has toned?

Thanks Gary for your reply, really appreciate.
Diameter is 26.50 and the badge is gilt, not silvered.

While I do not show a gold version of the Gau Baden for Women in my new book on Gau badges that has just hit the street, it is certainly possible that a gold version existed. I do show the badge being worn by a woman during the period. Can you post much better photos of this? I'd like to be sure that it is not merely tarnished silver. Thanks!

            Craig,

No need to post better photos as the badge is a cast fake.

Agreed. Poor details on front and reverse, with pitting that has been polished off clearly shows it as a cast fake.

I've seen that photo before, and didn't realize she was wearing the Gau badge--I thought it was a carved horn pin (like one would wear on the Lederhosen suspenders) in a patriotic form. D'oh!

Stan: one of the reasons I wanted better photos. The manufacturer stamp on the back did look a little "muddled."

The close ups do confirm the fact this it not an authentic piece. Total lack of detail, lots of "bubble holes" probably from casting and really washed out look.

According to some sources dated 1938 the women's version of this award was only awarded in silver grade. I believe there were planned awards in the gold grade (hence the initial mention in the Org. Book) but for one reason or the other none were actually awarded in the end (the women's gold version is omitted from later editions of the Org.Book). That of course does not mean that none were produced but I would think that close scrutiny of any gold small Gau Badens would be in order if they do make an appearance in the future.

                              cheers

                              Matt
