This is a very common SA "competition" event badge, however I think that the obverse detail is quite striking.

I really cannot imagine that the event was a competition between the SA and the Wehrmacht-Heer and I am instead assuming that the badge design and overt representation is suggesting the SA as metamorphosing into a fighting military force.

The date of 1939 is of course significant.

A striking piece David and we know who finally won the competition and it wasn't the SA!
