Not getting any action on this one so I'll blather on...

On further research, I noticed that some of these HJ Leader badges appear to have striations or lines within the numbers engraved on the back. I’m wondering what the presence of that feature may indicate.

Not all of the badges I’ve seen have these tell-tale lines within the engraved numbers. For instance, on Jeff Clark’s site (http://nsdapuniforms.com/engine/insp...SDAP+Militaria), his badge (photo below) doesn’t appear to have this feature. Likewise, on Gottlieb’s site (http://www.craiggottlieb.com/engine/...Filter=Archive), his (photo below) didn’t appear to have the feature.

Can anyone comment on the presence, or lack thereof, of the lines within the engraved numbers such that I might understand the significance?

      Thanx again, Rick

i personally do not like the badge in the first pic the reverse looks wrong almost domed, also the lack of lines in the engraving to me would be a red mark ads this is typical of period badges

Stuart, Sorry for the crappy photos - they're all I was given.

Not sure what you meant by "domed" - aren't they supposed to be a bit vaulted?

Regarding the lines or hash marks within the engraved numbers - 'all' period badges had them? What wasn't I seeing on Jeff Clarks badge? I did my best to magnify it on my computer & just didn't see them. Can you expand on your comments?

          Thanx,

its hard to explain but if you look at the reverse on a good badge and the reverse on the pic you posted the back of yours seems to have a differant shape to it, this could be down to the pics though so its hard to say,as for the letteringi dont know about all badges as i only collect huj but all these badges that i have seen have that tell tale marking where the numbers have been placed

I would wait for one with the lines in the numbers, and a more golden
colour. The first one posted looks odd, can,t see the bluey black enamel
              clearly on it either

I agree with the others here; leave it were it is. Its appereance looks odd. It doesn't look fire gilded to me. And I now there are good fakes out there with a different gold color.

For whatever it's worth, I got a couple of additional photos. Two of the full size & two of the mini.

Can't speak for the photography and/or lighting which certainly doesn't attest well to any remaining gilding but the engraved numbering certainly doesn't show the hash marks that are obvious on some accepted pieces. The pin & catch setup do certainly look to be correct based on my limited knowledge of these things.

The mini seems to retain a bit of gold finish. Can't speak for the pin/catch as I've not found any examples to compare to.

                    Any further thoughts? RC

Be carefull. On places were the gidling has worn off, you have to see a warm brownish colour from the underneath buntmetall. The catch, hinge an needle from the fakes come very very close to the originals. The only thing that jump out when you compare the good ones with the copies (which I had the opportunity for) is the differences in gold colour. All the rest are very tiny details.

                      Regards, Wim
