FROM IMAGES THE BADGE LOOKS 100% FAKE BUT ON CLOSER INSPECTION IT IS ORIGINAL !!!
I am about to put the Cat among the Pigeons by stating that from my perspective the Badge is original. It only appears to be a terrible fake because the Pictures are so appalling (sorry Jimmy but they are) The result gives the appearance on the images of a very poor cast fake when in fact it is an original that has had the pin replaced and also the possibility that the Badge has been replated.
Although fakes do exist with this sort of pin there are sufficent indications that this Badge is not one of them.
The Badge is certainly worthy of further discussion owing to the points already mentioned above

Hello Jimmy, still a difficult one to call, non the less from the new images the Badge gives one the impression that it has indeed been replated. In hand this would be far easier to determine with a quality eye loupe. although having said that the silver finish one expects to encounter when period is more of a whitish silver finish. With reference to the pin it really is not the pin you would expect to see on an original and indeed if Badge is to be acknowledged as original one would also have to acknowledge that the pin had also been replaced at some stage.

Martin I don't know what to look far. The sides don't have the tell tell casting lines on the contrary they appear to be sheared .
Also nickel plating has a yellow tint to it and chrome has a blueish tint having said that I would say this looks more like chrome. It definitely not silver plating that has a total different look.
So not cast & chrome plated would be my guess. I don't recall any German items from that time period have a chrome plating more like an American GI would do. As I have seen lots of post war plated (by GI's) pistols using chrome. No oxidation at all. Bright & shiney.
I will abide by the consensus here & withdraw it if I need to.

Hello Jimmy, I have posted an example of a rare HJ Badge for you to compare. Although the finish on my example below is period it has a silver finish that in hand has worn naturally over the Decades as on would expect revealing the Tombac finish beneath that has developed a very desirable Bronze Patina.
If your finish is Chromium Plate you are 100% on the Money it would indeed peel. non the less the finish does not appear to have been applied that recently
Regards Martin
PS ironically the Badge I have used as an example is the same makerAttached Files

Plating
Martin I have an almost 50 year background in guns and vintage automobiles and have seen virtually all types of plating.
This one as I said I would bet is chrome & yes some has peeled just like chrome.
The plating is not of a recent application as I know of the badges where abouts for the last 30 years.
