Deschler seefahrt badge - gilded (?!)

Gentlemen -

should i 'goo gone' this gilting if that's what it is, assuming someone put it (or ... Radiator paint?) on postwar? Or was gilding ever used and so i shd. Leave it alone? Seems unlikely b/c alu doesn't take gilt too well, does it? And, is 'deschler 9' a scarce maker?

This bades was never gilded, clean off the goo. Not into makers on this badge, but I would say not uncommon.
