    SS-Schützenabzeichen

    I recently bought this one.

I search the forum but found very little info about this award. However, it looks the same as those examples that were deemed original and that I could find pics of.

    Please give your opinions!

I like it, I like the construction too, a Ag/Zn/Ag sandwich, I've never liked any of the Al. only types that can be found. It's made by Gahr, a silversmith so one would expect some silver

Peter, I perhaps should have said, Draft design by Karl Diebtisch, Gahr works number 11. As far as I know it was a prototype and not put in production, the actual badges chosen for service being the cloth type.. See Meyer/Schild, 'Otto und Karolina Gahr -Die Silberschmiede der NSDAP'

Thanks for your input Steve. So, you mean all original metal badges of this type of award are prototypes and were never awarded or worn?

My knowledge about these badges is very limited and when this badge came up for auction in Sweden I took the risk and placed a bid on it. The price were about 55 Euro.

That's probably the deal of your lifetime then, they have sold for over 35 times that

I posted this here back in 2002:
'I’ll refer to 'Uniforms of the SS - Volume 4 - SS Totenkopfverbände 1933-1945' by Andrew Mollo (institution detail and manufacturer) and 'Otto und Karolina Gahr - Die Silberschmiede der NSDAP und der SS' by Arthur Meyer and Heinrich W. Schild. (Badge is pictured)

In October of 1936 the leader of staff district 'Elbe ' wrote to the Chief of the SS Main Office asking if SS members returning from service in the armed forces were allowed to wear their marksman's lanyard. The reply was the lanyard could not be worn but the shooting badges of the Reichswehr awarded to members of the SS before June 1st 1935 could be worn on the left cuff of the service tunic.

A draft institution order of the Reichsführer-SS dated November 1937 described the 'Schützenabzeichen der SS-VT' to be awarded to other ranks for shooting proficiency with rifle, light and heavy MG. The badge was to be worn on the right pocket and awarded in 3 classes, 2nd Class (without oak leaves), 1st Class (with two oak leaves) and Sharpshooting Class (with 3 oak leaves)

The class of the Sharpshooting Grade was to be engraved on the top oak leaf wreath.'

The badge finally instituted was in cloth and fairly common. There is no information to support these metal badges being instituted and they are rare to find.

                            Good thing to hear Thanks!

Although rare...I seem to recall seeing a few on different forums. So this production run of prototypes must have been larger than you would expect.

Or did Gahr started to produce these badges, expecting them to be authorized?

I were bidding on this as well. But thought the quality to be lacking for a Gahr piece. Oh well. Congratulations.
