      Hi R Michael,

i dont know if anyone has answered via P.M but i for one do not like this item, and belive it to be fake.

The material looks very modern and the insignia looks squashed there on, may be a burn test will verify this.

I would agree with Ashley's asessment of the badge. I would say fake.

        Cheers, Ade.

            burn

Have you tried black lighting it? It looks like the backing would glow.
The burn test= remove a thread from the backing or embroidery and gradually bring a flame close to it. At some point, the thread will either burn with a bit of ash left (good), or the end will melt and ball up, indicating a modern synthetic (bad).

I love the burn test; especially when someone pronounces a nice old piece made with real silk as "postwar" (silk can react like synthetic) or when last week's everyday cotton-wrapped polyester is judged "old, genuine, original" (typically the cotton content is high enough to mask the polyester). IMHO the only reliable thread test is done with a microscope. And that's if you believe in the whole natural fiber vs. synthetic concept, which moves the invention and commercial use of synthetic materials from the 1920s up to the late 1940s.
