    DRL badge question

Is this badge okay? I thought the coke bottle pin was unusual.

Better than good! Most of those DRL without swastikas of this type (no maker's name at all) have the letters INSIDE the cypher not cut out, only pierced along the wreath. Any one of this variant I've seen has had this style pin.

I suspect they were "rush jobs" from a "low bidder" at the time of the '36 Olympics-- couldn't MAKE them fast enough to keep up with demand.

Rick, How can you tell from this picture that this badge is without a swastika? Also as this is not an Olympic award why would there be a rush to make so many in that year.

Not wishing to steal Rik's thunder, but if I was German and had been knocking around the time of the 1936 Olympics I would definitely be going for my DRL badge. It seems logical that there should be an increase in interest in sport and indeed its pursuit within the realms of the DRL when you are about to host the world's biggest sporting event. Plus it might go down well with the ladies!

"Rick, How can you tell from this picture that this badge is without a swastika?"

          a) psychic?

          b) sold my soul to da debbil?

Nooooo... the ONLY ones I have ever seen with smooth makerless reverses and the coke-bottle pins are the DRL without swastika (1934-37) type. Oddly enough, I've never seen a BRONZE one, only Silver and Gold!

But as Richard says, the peak of awards was in those years-- everybody back in uniform, everybody wanted something to wear on a uniform, and the Olympics.

This is the main thread on these National Sport Badges:

          http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...l+sports+badge

Although there is no serial number on the badges, the award booklets bore a consecutive serial number by each grade, so from those, it's possible to get an idea of how many were issued, and when.
