This is perhaps an interesting SA Marine badge which I think was issued as a commemoration and consecration item in memory of the lost sailing ship "Niobe".
The Segelschulschiff "Niobe" was a tall ship used by the German Navy to train cadets and aspiring non commissioned officers.
During a sudden squall on the 26th July 1932, the tall ship capsized near the German island of Fehmarn in the Baltic Sea and sank within minutes. Due to the then hot weather, all hatches and portholes were open. 40 of her crew were rescued by the cargo ship Theresia L M Russ, however 69 of the crew died. The tall ship was raised on the 21st August 1932, towed to Kiel and inspected, allowing the lost crews remains to be buried. On the 18th September 1933, the wreck was ceremonially sunk by a torpedo boat, attended by much of the then small German Navy.
Regards,
David
