John, Tom's badge and David North's badge are the only ones that I would be comfortable having in my collection.

      Hi Erich-

Most curious, as my example has the raised lettering.

Here is a reverse of an example with raised lettering that I would not feel comfortable with....--edit-- file size too large, anyway it was a picture showing a cruder reverse copied from the style with the raised letters,

John, sorry, but I don't like your version of this badge. The letters should be impressed and not raised on these first type badges. The alignment of the lettering on your badge is also incorrect IMO.

                This is most confusing.

When I decided to search for and eventually secure one of these quite enigmatic, special and rare event badges, I knew exactly what I was looking for. As such, the one that I hold sits jolly comfortably with myself.

I fully support what Erich has said and which is obviously based on painstaking research, although having said, a fundamental question is waiting to be asked.

Why should those intent on deception produce a badge which is so obviously different from that, regarded by many as the definitive?

Here is a photo merge of the badge that John "linked" and the one that I hold.

                Totally different!

Rather akin to the fakers stamping FAKE on their badge, as it is not really rocket science to spot the blazingly obvious differences.

                Regards,

                David

David, like the 29 RPT badge, I think there was only one maker for the actual badge sold at the events rather than those made later when these badges gained honor status. With that being said, there would have no reason IMO, for there to be more than one maker of these badges. It's well known that the 31 Treffen badge, both types is one of the most faked meeting badge. Yours is one of only a few that I think is one hundred percent original.

To say that there was one maker of the badge at the time period, or that the version with stamped letters is the only correct version is of course speculation and you can see that my version with the raised letters is different than the copy version of which there are many.

I have studied the Brunswick Treffen badges for some time now with my interest being aroused with the proliferation of the copies (both the first and second pattern badges).

Stick a fork in me I am done.

None of us was there when these badges were made but it comes down on what we are comfortable with having in our collections and David's example is the only one I would want in mine for what it' worth.

Hello all, sorry for my tardiness in getting back to the thread.

Gentlemen, the example that the late Dr. Klietmann illustrates as original is a match to my example with the raised lettering.

A most easy to spot difference is the top of the "A" in "S-A". My example took a hit at the beak.

The Klietmann example has uniformity in the lettering spelling the word "BRAUNSCHWEIG" while the examples with recesses have the letters at different sizes as an artistic preference. My point is simply that IMO there are more than one period produced example and the Dr. is illustrating my version.

I tried to clean up my picture a bit...this is what the Dr shows as a period example and what the prolific copies with raised letters are based on...note for example the similarity in the "G" and how it is similar on the copies, but other details differ....
